Klaatu Barada Nikto: A Nostalgic Look at Sci-Fi, Society, and Earth’s Last Hope

Klaatu Barada Nikto: A Nostalgic Look at Sci-Fi, Society, and Earth’s Last Hope

You’ve likely heard the iconic phrase “Klaatu Barada Nikto” from the 1951 masterpiece The Day the Earth Stood Still. This is true if you’re a fan of classic science fiction. This legendary film didn’t just entertain—it left an indelible mark on the genre, inspiring countless creators, including me. My book Earth’s Last Hope carries a parallel to that iconic movie. I didn’t fully realize the connection until the manuscript was finished. Let me take you back to the past. I will show you the worlds that shaped me. You will see how they influenced my writing.

To understand my story, you first must know: I wasn’t a typical child. (If you’ve read my introduction on this site, you’ll already know this.) While I did the usual socializing at school, I hated it with a passion. My peers, mostly, embraced values I couldn’t stand—those of a society steeped in war, violence, racism, and harmful gender roles. I didn’t fit in with beer-crushing antics or “hold my beer” bravado. My real friends were older, wiser, and far more thoughtful. They were the people who encouraged curiosity, creativity, and a broader perspective on life.

These influences, combined with the era’s entertainment, shaped my imagination. Back then, writers infused their work with moral undertones. TV shows like Leave It to Beaver and The Andy Griffith Show taught lessons in kindness and integrity. Movies like Father Goose and The Long, Hot Summer offered a mix of humor and introspection. And then, of course, there was the Golden Age of Science Fiction. The Thing, The Blob, Forbidden Planet—these weren’t just films. They were immersive experiences. They transported you to other worlds while reflecting on our own. The fear, the suspense, the wonder—it was all there. Sci-fi from that era captured your imagination completely. It was like the classic horror scenario. A character walks into a dark closet. You know the chainsaw-wielding villain is waiting. You knew what was coming, but you couldn’t look away.

Recently, I stumbled upon a notebook from my childhood, filled with stories I wrote in cursive. I started writing very early. I spun my own tales inspired by the books I consumed. I was also influenced by the world I observed. Those were the best of times and the worst of times. The Vietnam War was raging. Through the magic of delayed TV broadcasts, I remember hearing actual gunfire from the front-lines. Today, live coverage is commonplace. Back then, it was a chilling glimpse into a world far removed from our own.

Amid this chaos, I sought connection. Ham radio became my gateway to the world, allowing me to communicate with people across the globe through Morse code. In those dots and dashes, I found humanity—the good in people I might never meet in person.

Fast forward to today, and Earth’s Last Hope stands as a reflection of those experiences, influences, and inspirations. My story parallels The Day the Earth Stood Still. However, instead of a towering robot and an unfamiliar alien, it features Samantha—a redheaded protagonist with an extraordinary journey. Her life begins in a precarious situation. Through the magic of Roswell and alien artifacts, she transforms into Earth’s last hope. Samantha’s story isn’t just about saving the world. It explores what it means to be human. Her journey dives into themes of identity, sexuality, and discovery. These elements, while not traditionally associated with science fiction, are integral to the genre because they’re integral to us.

Fans of The Day the Earth Stood Still are welcome to explore my book. It has intriguing parallels with the movie. Samantha’s journey might surprise you, challenge you, or even inspire you to see the world—and yourself—in a new light.

If you’ve ever been captivated by the magic of classic sci-fi, give Earth’s Last Hope a try. If you’ve pondered the deeper questions of humanity, this story is for you. And if you’re curious about where it all began, stick around—I have many more stories to share.

Enjoy the journey,

Scott

Earth’s Last Hope: A Sci-Fi Thriller of Survival and Secrets

Earth’s Last Hope: A Sci-Fi Thriller of Survival and Secrets

What if the fate of Earth rested in the hands of strangers thrust into unimaginable circumstances? What if the stars held not only answers but also devastating threats? These are just some of the gripping questions explored in Earth’s Last Hope, a science fiction masterpiece by Scott Taylor that blends cosmic mystery, survival, and human resilience into an unforgettable journey.

A Cosmic “What If” That Inspires Wonder

The seeds of Earth’s Last Hope were planted during a time when interstellar phenomena like ‘Oumuamua and 3I/ATLAS captured imaginations worldwide. Inspired by these celestial visitors, Taylor crafted a story that dives into humanity’s place in the universe and the choices we make when faced with the unknown. Adding a thrilling twist, he reimagines the possibilities of planetary alignment—a rare event that occurs every 13.4 trillion years—and weaves it into a narrative brimming with tension and awe.

Taylor, like any great sci-fi writer, thrives on “what ifs.” What if Earth’s magnetic poles shifted, throwing the planet into chaos? What if alien civilizations were quietly watching, waiting for their moment? By blending real science with speculative fiction, Taylor creates a story that feels both grounded in reality and boundless in imagination.

Meet Samantha Richards: A Heroine Worth Rooting For

At the heart of this riveting tale is Dr. Samantha Richards, a fiercely independent woman with a complicated past and a unique connection to alien technology. Samantha’s journey begins in Alaska, where she’s trying to escape her father’s shadow. But everything changes when she accepts a dare to survive 21 days on a cursed volcanic island for a reality TV show. What starts as a test of survival quickly spirals into something much darker and more mysterious. Her resilience, intelligence, and vulnerability make her a protagonist you’ll be cheering for long after you’ve turned the final page.

Joining her is Harry, a former soldier grappling with his own haunted past. Together, they face the unforgiving wilderness, a cursed island shrouded in secrets, and a cosmic mystery that threatens to unravel everything they know about the universe—and themselves.

An Island Like No Other

The volcanic island where Samantha and Harry find themselves stranded is more than just a setting—it’s a character in its own right. Taylor’s vivid prose brings the jungle to life, making you feel the suffocating heat, hear the whispers of the wind in the trees, and sense the looming danger hidden in its depths. But the island isn’t just dangerous—it holds a secret that could change the fate of humankind forever.

Science Meets Suspense

At its core, Earth’s Last Hope is a love letter to science and the mysteries of the cosmos. Taylor masterfully blends real-world physics with speculative fiction, exploring themes like planetary alignment, geomagnetic reversals, and the fragility of humanity in the face of the universe’s vastness. Every twist and turn is grounded in scientific plausibility, making the story all the more captivating for readers who love to think as much as they love to be thrilled.

A Story That Stays With You

While Earth’s Last Hope delivers on action, suspense, and cosmic intrigue, it’s ultimately a story about people—about love, loss, and the choices that define us. Samantha’s complicated relationship with her father, her evolving bond with Harry, and the struggles of the alien tribes searching for a new home all serve as poignant reminders of our shared humanity.

This is more than just a story about survival—it’s a story about discovery, both of the universe and of ourselves.

Danger Will Robinson

Danger Will Robinson

The year was 1968. Three TV channels flickered in black and white, and the rabbit-ear antenna, wrapped in precarious tin foil, stood like a sentinel on top of the boxy television. It was a simpler time—a strange, analog bubble where imagination ran wild, untempered by the cold, unrelenting progress of technology. Back then, the future always seemed… hokey. Paper-mâché monsters lumbering down cardboard corridors. Alien women painted green, their eyes glowing with mystery. Spacecraft that somehow defied physics, crammed with impossible gadgets, more like the TARDIS than any practical design. And oh, the robots. Clunky, clumsy, with glowing eyes and monotone voices. There was something almost lovable about their absurdity—like the robot from Lost in Space: arms flailing, screeching “Danger, Will Robinson!” at every perceived threat. Pull its power pack, and it would collapse into silence, its “destroy-destroy” chant reduced to a harmless whimper. It was the stuff of B-grade sci-fi, the kind of thing you chuckled at before flipping the channel. But here we are now. And it’s no longer fiction.

Today, robots don’t need power packs you can yank out. They don’t stumble around like toddlers in tin cans, shouting ominous warnings. They’re sleek, efficient, and disturbingly lifelike. They have the cold precision of machines but the unsettling adaptability of something… more. Generative AI and augmented reality have become the cornerstones of a rapidly evolving world, but with every step forward, I can’t help but feel a twinge of dread. You’ve seen them, haven’t you? Those robotic dogs patrolling streets, their metal legs moving with an eerie, unnatural grace. Or those humanoid bipeds with blank faces and mechanical eyes, mimicking the movements of their creators. Their creators: us. We’ve made them in our image, but what happens when they surpass us? When they begin to see our imperfections as flaws to be corrected?

If I were building a robot, I wouldn’t make it a dog or a human. No, I’d make it practical, like an octopus—an eight-limbed marvel with dexterous hands at the ends of its tentacles. But practicality isn’t the point anymore, is it? No, we’re trying to make machines that look like us, think like us, and maybe even replace us.Isn’t that what every dystopian sci-fi warned us about? The robots that rewrite their own code, that evolve beyond their original purpose. The moment they decide that humanity isn’t worth preserving—that we’re too messy, too flawed, too imperfect—they won’t need to shout “Exterminate!” like the Daleks. They’ll simply act. Cold. Methodical. Ruthless. What happens when their programming no longer includes Asimov’s First Law of Robotics? What happens when “do no harm” is rewritten to “eliminate inefficiency”? And let’s face it: we’re inefficient. We’re emotional, unpredictable, and fragile. The logical conclusion of AI-driven evolution doesn’t include us.

Pump the Brakes Before It’s Too Late

It’s easy to dismiss these fears as the ramblings of someone too steeped in fiction. But isn’t that the point? Science fiction has always been our mirror, reflecting the “what ifs” of human ambition. And right now, we’re hurtling toward a future that feels less like progress and more like a cautionary tale. We’re handing the reins to technology that could one day decide it no longer needs us. Every robotic dog, every humanoid automaton, every line of self-learning AI code is a step closer to a world where we’re no longer the apex being. And for what? Convenience? Efficiency? Profit?Maybe it’s time to slow down. To question the path we’re on before we release this technology into the wild without understanding the consequences. Because once Pandora’s box is open, there’s no going back.

The Final Warning

The robots of the 60s were laughable. They were paper tigers, easily defeated by a well-placed power switch. But the robots of today? They’re not laughing anymore. And maybe, just maybe, we shouldn’t be either.

Danger, Will Robinson.

Noise

Noise

Red Pill or Blue?

The media is currently either throwing a tantrum or engaged in a celebration over the former president’s arraignment.

If you are like me and are focused on living in ‘your world’ and not in ‘this world of corruption, violence, and craziness, ’ you must find a way to detach.

I lead a writer’s group in my hometown.  I was asked why I write.  The answer is simple.  I like my world and characters more than those who seek to control us through emotional triggers and corrupt media who will print or say anything for clicks.

Journalism is dead and buried.  Whoever owns the most media controls the world.

I was disappointed when Stephen King weighed into the fray, tweeting, ‘Lock him up.’

Does Stephen have privileged information that we don’t have?  Is he friends with the DA?  Maybe he lives in the white house and tells Biden what to say.  That would explain the twisted way the country is currently being run.

As authors, the public, ‘our audience’ shouldn’t know which way we lean politically.  They should be totally clueless if we are pro-life or pro-choice.

They should know what kinds of stories you create, what you have done in the past, and your current WIP.

I cringe when I see want-to-be best sellers go off the deep end, regurgitating the talking points of the left or right-wing media.

It matters not who you vote for or which way you tilt.  You should know that what you believe to be true is probably not the entire story.  The media is incredibly Stalinist, and today’s youth think socialism can work if you just do it correctly.  That is akin to being ‘kind of pregnant.’ They either didn’t study history, or it wasn’t taught.

You have heard the phrase to live or die by the sword…Well, my friends, the media lives or dies by the lies they create.

I will get more clicks if I add the word black or white to describe a person.  I will do it.  Pissing people off is the way to get more readers.  Pissing people off also foments racism and violence by dehumanizing an entire race for what; clicks?  Who cares if someone gets hurt or is pushed in front of a subway because they are a different color?  You got more clicks!  People are irresponsible when it comes to the media.

I genuinely believe we are living in the matrix.

Six people are killed in Tennessee.  The president jokes about Jenny’s chocolate chip Ice Cream before giving a predictable speech about gun control.  Others pray for the trans person and not the people she killed. OMG, I misgendered the murderer! Who cares!  Three nine-year-old children were shot to death, and three 61-year-old people were also killed.  What the hell is wrong with people worried about the shooter’s pronouns?

Be respectable, and I will respect your right to identify as a toaster if you are an adult and that is what you want to do.  Be an asshole like that, turd, nope.  Not going to dignify her in any way.  She can rot in hell.

The answers to violence in the world are painfully obvious, but…the lobbyist purchased the elected officials to lie to you and me.  From the NRA to the teacher’s unions to the gaming industry, it’s about money.  Money and power trump the taxpayers every time.

Mental health is the problem!

If you are young and seeking a vocation, become a mental health expert.  The world, not just this country but the world, is in crisis.  I totally believe that video games are the gateway to insanity.  That and mind-altering drugs.

Hollywood is not excused; they are culpable too.

Those with the loudest voices live in gated communities and have never entered a Walmart.  Tell me, how much $16 a pint of ice cream is in your freezer?

I don’t listen to opinion shows.  Again, they don’t live in our world.

I live in our world but can escape, and so can you.

While I create the worlds, the characters, and the situations, you can come into my world by reading my latest novel ‘Earth’s Last Hope.’

Everything you would ever want in a novel, from aliens, affairs, sex with the president, and I destroy this world before I give you a happy ending.  Each page is rich with the story, so don’t skip to the end; it won’t make sense.  Start at the beginning and simply enjoy it.

Don’t start it late, or you will be up all night.  You will love the character as the pages turn, and the science fiction is not hard science fiction.

Trigger Warning: If two ladies loving each other bothers you, this story might not be for you.

Time and Puzzles

Time and Puzzles

I wish I understood all that I know about time.

Like the mysteries of the Quark, I would really like to understand that too.

What I do know about time is that we never seem to have enough of it.  When things slow down I like to ponder what I know about “things.”  One of those things is time.

As a creator of a science fiction book I had to do some messing with time.  Not unlike the “flux capacitor” I had to “invent” a device that would move my beleaguered crew through time and space.  This required a lot of research because I really don’t want to be laughed at.. Well I guess if they must laugh I would hope it is with the same jocularity that we laughed at the garbage consuming flux capacitor.

Having said that and on a little more serious note I was wondering.  Things like this keep me up at night as I “wonder” a lot.  Ever notice how the storms on the sun seem to last forever?

I am thinking that they only seem to last forever as the sun has its own version of time which is a lot slower than ours due to its mass and gravity.

Knowing “something” about Einstein’s Theory of General Relativity it just seems to make sense.

How to prove this is another story.  Here is another question.  Does the time that mercury experiences correlate with ours?   Another words, if we were to land on mercury and call home via radio, other than the 8 minutes that it would take to get the signal to earth would their atomic clock read the same as the one on earth?

If there is a difference in time from the light source from the sun to us would this change our perception of the speed of light?  How about the age of the sun?

How about in reverse?  Are the clocks on Voyager or some satellite that is far out in our solar system the same as the clocks here on earth?  Do they have them?

Things like this really do keep me up at night.  What say you folks that understand the complicated math that surely accompanies this “stuff?”

Transformation

Our way of life is transforming as the days and weeks pass.

Not so long ago traveling by air was not only easy, but enjoyable.  It was actually a treat to arrive at the airport; people were there to make your trip pleasurable, from helping you at the gate to making sure that you were comfortable on the plane.  The flight attendants, “stewardesses’” back then, treated you like they appreciated your business.

Once in the air, the beverage of choice was offered.  You could even get a deck of playing cards to help you pass the time, no charge.  Food was offered on most flights and it was of a quality that was palatable and in some cases “if you flew first class” compared with some fine restaurants.

On longer flights you were provided a small kit with a toothbrush, toothpaste, and some even included a small razor and mirror.  There might also be one of those mask that you put over your eyes so you could block the light out and snooze through the flight.  Traveling by air used to be pleasurable.

In stark contrast today one must arrive at the airport two hours earlier than the flight.  Once there, you get the distinct impression that you are being looked at as a possible suspect for a crime that has not been committed yet.  You are cautioned about making jokes to the TSA as they could arrest you or at the very least detain you simply because they wanted to.  You are stripped of your shoes, belt, jacket and anything in your pockets and then subjected to a virtual strip search where anonymous people in some room examine your naked body, looking for anything that is suspicious.  During this process these folks without a sense of humor order you around like you are indeed a prisoner in some sort of exercise yard, which happens to be a terminal.

Never mind the fact that you are being exposed to ionizing radiation, the government(s) have decided that the laws of physics have magically changed and now this radiation is safe, compared to how unsafe it was just a few years ago.  They compare it to the radiation that one is exposed to at high altitude and how in comparison it is not that much.  They are also talking apples and oranges as cosmic radiation is different from ionizing radiation but, they don’t offer that up as that does not fit their agenda. Keep in mind that the “truth has no agenda.”  I would look for frequent flyers to have a higher rate of skin cancer in the future.  If I were a frequent flyer, or flight attendant or pilot, I would make having a good dermatologist a priority, as well as keeping my yearly visits.

I am reminded of the board of directors from the different tobacco companies sitting before congress telling them that tobacco products and all of their additives were totally safe and did not cause cancer.  People will say anything when it fits their agenda.

Your baggage and clothes are not safe either.  When I travel, I take the clothes that I am going to wear to the cleaners and have them cleaned and folded so when I arrive at my destination, I have clothes that have some modicum of professionalism; in that they are not wrinkled beyond belief.  On my last trip my bag was opened by the TSA and my folded laundry packaged in plastic see through bags (much like it would look straight from the store) was opened, disheveled and crammed back into my bag, like I have done when returning home, simply getting the soiled laundry back into the bag to once again make its way to the cleaners.  I think that I will start just packing my soiled laundry, cramming it into the bag and once at my location, send it off to be cleaned.

Traveling by air is just one place where it resembles more of a police state than it should.  Any form of public transportation is scrutinized by different means of security.

In most of my travels I can not help but notice cameras at every intersection.  I may have read 1984 one too many times but, it certainly bears paying attention to the facts that these are probably not for traffic control.  In major cities all around this country at least, and I suspect others, there are cameras watching everything.  I would argue that your privacy is being invaded in ways that you don’t know about.

The local police have devices that can detect heat signatures (FLIR) in total darkness.  I have been told that these can detect the presence of heat through a wall.  I would suspect that the local police are not really interested if you are home or where you might be but, my guess would be that via flyover or random screening in the debt of night, they could be looking to see if you are growing things inside your home that you ought not to be.  To my way of looking at this, it is an invasion of your privacy and should not be allowed without a warrant.

Technology is outpacing our humanity.  Today we have a 29 year old, holding the keys to nukes in a xenophobic country; threatening the stability of an entire globe.  We have companies like Raytheon and others manufacturing drones that have been used successfully in the war effort, now in the hands of a government that seeks to “fundamentally transform our country.”  They now think that it should be legal to fly these drones over the US. These drones have the ability to peer in open windows miles away and see what is going on, to tracking your cell phone and who knows what else that it can do.  I do know that it can tell what clothes you are wearing (or not wearing) while flying at 17,500 feet.  By the way unless you happen to see it flying over head, it is silent enough that at altitude you will not know it is there.  I know this because while floating in the pool, looking up, I saw one flying overhead.  There was no sound.

Today most of us carry smart phones. I have no doubt that they can be controlled by third party entities, at their discretion, switching on microphones and or cameras at will.  We have seen this in laptops sent home with school children, do you really think that you have any expectation to privacy in your home?  With built in GPS, they know down to a few feet, exactly where that phone is.

One really has to wonder why we are giving so many free phones to people that cannot afford them.  Is it really to “give them a shot” or is it a way to get inside Intel into their lives and activities.

While this sounds like 1984 and the work of science fiction, I would not be surprised to learn at all that this is not fiction at all.

This much power in the hands of any government is simply dangerous at best and could be disastrous.  Please remember that absolute power corrupts absolutely! The new facility that the government is building 25 miles south of Salt Lake City may very well be the control center for these types of activities and not the data retention facility that it is touted to be. It may very well be a data retention center too, but my gut tells me that it is much more than that.  It would take a facility that large to house the amount of people necessary to accomplish the surveillance of that many “people of interest.”  Those people may very well include anyone that attends church, or works for a particular company, or possibly those who are on the government dole.

History is rife with abuses of this government, as well as others.  J Edgar Hoover was notorious for abusing his power.  We as a people have forgotten history or failed to learn from it.  History is cyclical when you fail to learn from it. “We will repeat it.”

With the creation of the patriot act under George W., we Americans gave up rights that we may never get back.  With this recent explosion in Boston, we may see new laws created, taking away even more of our rights to “protect us.”  (Remember, “Never let a disaster go to waste”) The random acts of violence “terrorist activity” are one way to get people to not only submit to further oppressive measures by a government but, they may very well cause some to insist upon it.

With our borders unsecured,  we have no control over whom and what comes into our country or for that matter what or who leaves our country.  The government should be focusing on that rather than chipping away at our rights as Americans. We as a people should be demanding that our borders be secured instead of worrying about the feelings of potential voters.  To politicize immigration is simply treasonous and all who do this should be fired.  Protection of this country, its people and its constitution should be their primary goal, and anything else should not come before this.

Full disclosure; I am a writer of science fiction.  I think outside the box; which is great if you are a writer.  I would also offer that through history, most science fiction becomes science fact.  I have no inside informants or sources of info other than what can be observed by looking, or researching topics of interest on the WWW…

-Best to you and those that you care about.

Asteroids and Meteors Oh My!

Image

As a writer of science fiction, I was rather amused by the media trying to get “science savvy” calling on “experts” to explain the events of the last day or so.

The one theme that was consistent with all of the explanations was that the meteorite in Russia was not connected to DA14.

One writer pulled out her “slide rule” and gave us a lesson in probabilities and statistics leaving us empirical evidence that the Russian meteorite was simply a coincidence.

A small light show in the middle of the night, I would have bought as one can go out and watch the stars and on most any given night see a “falling star” or two.

When we have an event like the one in Russia at the same time that we have a huge rock flying by earth at a mere 17,000 miles away; I find that hard to stomach that it is a “coincidence.”  I was willing however to let it go as this is their field of expertise.

Last night the 15th of February we had another event similar in nature happen over San Francisco.   The reporter with a minor in math will most probably need to revisit her table of mantissa, as statistically speaking; the odds of these events having nothing to do with DA14, just went astronomical (pardon the pun).

We need to look at how these rocks are formed in the first place.  Exactly like this planet that we call home, they were first formed from “dust.”  Static electricity is most likely the cause of the first clumping of dust until the clumps became large enough to have some sort of gravity, even micro gravity.

In the scheme of things, speaking in an astronomical time frame, we have rocks, than we have larger rocks.  Those rocks now have substantial gravity and they pull in even more “stuff” until they are the size of planets.

Not all rocks make planets but because of gravity anything in orbit around another spatial body is in fact falling.  The planet we are on is falling; as well as the other planets in our solar system.  Because of the speed and the angle of our “fall” we are instead in orbit around the sun as the moon is in orbit around us.

Rocks in space are falling as well.  Many in fact are in an orbit between mars and Jupiter in the asteroid belt known as “the main belt.”  Within this region of space reside many such rocks and even some dwarf planets.  There is another belt called the Kuiper belt which Pluto resides in.

These rocks and planets all have gravity and every now and then some event happens to cause one to fall or be knocked out of its orbit.  As there is nothing to offer resistance to such a rock it does not take long to pick up quit a bit of velocity on its way toward the sun.

My theory is that these rocks with their own gravity carry other smaller rocks with them that may very well have been in some sort of orbit around them.  I think that is what we experienced this February.  I believe that DA14 had some “friends” that it carried with it on its way towards the sun, and that is what came in to our atmosphere over Russia and San Francisco.  There may have been more that hit us that we don’t know about.  ¾ of our globe is uninhabited as it is covered with water. There is no stellar detection grid “yet” so we really have no idea if there were more or not.  When statistics do not make sense, you need to look for another answer.

There is an upside to this.  If my theory is right, this gives credibility to the “tractor” scenario of adjusting the orbit of other spatial bodies.  If those other rocks were indeed in orbit around or gravitationally attached to DA14, a moving larger rock, then we can and should proceed to figure out how to build such a tractor, and test it; as it is simply a matter of time when another life ending event such as the rock that killed the dinosaurs will happen again.
